TINY images of Colditz Castle have taken the top prize in a £10,000 art contest.

Edinburgh Art College graduate Frances Rokhlin was named winner of this year’s Glenfiddich Residency Award for “atmospheric” pictures of the grim stronghold used to hold Allied soldiers in the Second World War .

The 24-year-old was selected from among the artists in the RSA New Contemporaries exhibition, which opens to the public at the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries in Edinburgh today.

Andy Fairgrieve, co-ordinator of the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence programme, said: “In an age where large-scale attention-grabbing works seem to be in fashion, it is refreshing to see an artist who has the confidence to buck the trend and follow a different path.”
