FOR as long as there has been Unicode, those living in the United Kingdom have only ever had one choice when it came to flag emojis; the Union Jack.

That's all about to change.

Unicode president and co-founder Mark Davis announced today that the Scottish Saltire will soon be available as an emoji, as well as the national flags of England and Wales.

Alex Salmond has famously been one of the voices that spoke out in support of Scotland getting its own emoji, and now it seems that his wish will come true in the second half of 2017.

The three flag emojis were approved during a meeting of the Unicode Technical Committee, the body that decides which emojis and characters are available across platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

You can expect to see the new emojis appearing on your phone this summer.
