TRAINSPOTTING 2 bosses are to “choose Edinburgh” for the world premiere of the hotly-anticipated sequel to the iconic movie, it has been confirmed. Twenty years on from the release of the original film, T2 Trainspotting will be unveiled at the city’s Fountain Park Cineworld later this month.

Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and the rest of the cast are expected to attend the January 22 screening.

McGregor’s star turn as addict Renton helped turn him into a Hollywood leading man, while Carlyle’s diminutive hard man Begbie is amongst Scottish cinema’s best-known characters.

Meanwhile, Jonny Lee Miller will reprise his role as Sick Boy and Ewan Bremner will step into Spud’s trainers for a second time.

While the 1996 film was based on the critically acclaimed Irvine Welsh novel of the same name, the sequel is adapted from his 2002 follow-up Porno, which sees the characters reunite ten years on.

Both big screen versions are directed by Danny Boyle, who is also set to attend the premiere.

The trailer for the sequel was released in November and opened with McGregor’s Renton returning to Edinburgh to see his friends again. Over the strains of Underworld’s hit Born Slippy, which featured prominently in the first film, Renton revives his bitter “choose life” motto but with modern references, stating: “Choose Facebook, choose Twitter, choose Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere, cares.”

He also refers to choosing reality TV, slut-shaming, revenge porn and zero-hour contracts before saying: “Choose to smother the pain with an unknown dose of an unknown drug.”

Renton’s narration ends with: “You’re an addict, so be addicted, just be addicted to something else. Choose the ones you love, choose your future, choose life.”

The cast and crew from the new film were seen filming at various locations across Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland in 2016.

In July, McGregor and Bremner were seen sprinting out of a shop on Princes Street, with Oscar-winner Boyle directing the pair as they recreated the famous opening chase sequence from the first movie.

The movie will go on general release across the UK on January 27.
