ROBERT Plant, Ben Watt and Karine Polwart sang; Graham Coxon, Martin Simpson and Bernard Butler played guitar. Spread over Sunday and Monday nights, Bert Inspired: A Concert For Bert Jansch was a standout gig, even in what has been one of the best Celtic Connections programmes to date.

Anyone wanting to continue their celebration of this Scottish legend, who died in 2011, should turn their ears towards Avocet, which is re-released tomorrow in several formats including a gorgeous remastered vinyl edition complete with lithograph art prints of the six birds whose names form the track list.

Avocet was recorded in Copenhagen in 1978 and features Martin Jenkins and Jansch’s old Pentangle compadre Danny Thomson. An evocative folk-jazz instrumental concept piece, it was one of Jansch’s personal favourites among his studio output, and is the latest in Earth Recordings’ series of Jansch reissues, which began with Live At The 12 Bar early last year.
