Everest: World’s Greatest Mountain, C5, 9pm
A NEW series exploring the world’s mountains starts at the very peak, with the highest in the world – Everest. It took on mythical status in Britain during the 1920s, when climbers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine disappeared near the summit. Three decades later, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing Norgay’s triumphant 1953 ascent of Everest was celebrated during Coronation Day. The documentary also explores the forces that created Everest 50 million years ago, and how some of that energy triggered a deadly 2015 earthquake. There’s also a look at the people and animals who live there.

The character, played by the wonderfully deadpan Diane Morgan, has gone on to host her own specials, offering a staggering lack of insight into her subjects. Now, she’s landed her own mockumentary series in which she explores the history of Britain.
