CRAFTSMANSHIP, elegance and femininity are the foundations which underpin Scottish jewellery brand Ellen Catherine.
The company was founded by Catherine Nuttall, who was born and raised in Edinburgh.
From a young age, Nuttall enjoyed making and doing. Her interest in craft peaked after she attended an Edinburgh College of Art summer school where she made a silver ring.
She later developed her passion through further education, studying contemporary applied art at the University of Cumbria.
Nuttall explains: “At the summer school we were taught to make a silver ring. I found it fascinating to work with traditional techniques to make something so simple and stylish. The idea stayed with me throughout university and still features in all my work today.”
Nuttall graduated in 2012, after which she returned to Edinburgh to gain industry experience working for the Edinburgh Assay Office. Two years later, she launched Ellen Catherine. The brand name acts as a tribute to her grandma Ellen, who was an enthusiastic crafter herself.
Nuttall keeps her jewellery production local. She handmakes pieces from her workshop in Beaverhall Art Studios before they are hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office.
Nuttall’s jewellery provides the wearer with flexibility; pieces can be worn individually or layered on top of each other to make more of a statement. Moreover, her pieces are designed to be timeless.
To date, the brand has launched three collections – The Ember, The Meridian and The Classics.
The Ember features bold geometric circles with bezel-set stones. The range is designed to be worn dressed up or dressed down. The Meridian, on the other hand, focuses on understated elegance. The collection features circle designs which are complemented by tiny beads. The final collection, The Classics, includes simple pieces such as stud earrings and stacking rings.
Nuttall also offers a tailor-made service which primarily focuses on engagement and wedding rings.
Despite only launching in 2014, the brand has experienced several successes. Last year was Nuttall’s most successful to date – a highlight includes working with Scotland Re:Designed.
Looking ahead, Nuttall aspires to expand her in-store and online stockists. Above all, she wants her jewellery to be recognised for its bespoke handmade appeal and its stylish yet contemporary aesthetic.
