LOVE, LIES AND RECORDS, BBC1, 9pm

THIS new series from Kay Mellor started off like every other dull family drama: the kitchen is messy, the kids are cranky, there’s no coffee left, the school run has to be done…

Then it seemed to get even worse when we see our lead character, Kate (Ashley Jensen) works in the local council offices registering births, deaths and marriages. Bureaucracy and family strife? Oh dear God, let me switch if off. But then it suddenly swerved into something darker. A tiny newborn is brought along to be registered. He was born at the local hospice, where his mother is dying of cancer.

Suddenly we see that trouble, stress and secrets are burbling under the surface, and we realise that life in Leeds council office is actually quite fraught, especially when Kate’s caustic colleague, played by Rebecca Front, is refused a juicy promotion which goes to Kate instead.

TRUMP: AN AMERICAN DREAM, C4, 9pm

THIS brilliant series which examines Trump’s life opens with his notorious “daddy issues”. One journalist who met him in the 80s noted his psychological similarity to other rich men who’ve been raised by wealthy fathers.

So while the elder Trump made his fortune by building unexciting apartment blocks for ordinary folk, Trump decided to go bigger, brasher and glitzier by investing in casinos. His sensible daddy warned him that the Trump Organisation lacked the expertise to suddenly break into the gambling business, but his spoiled son didn’t listen. He needed to prove he was special!

An investigative journalist met him at the time and fed him some fake facts about the casino business, expecting Trump to correct him. Instead, Trump took this “fake news” and wove it into his replies. “That’s what con artists do.”
