A UNIQUE event set to shine a light on the charity Scottish Women’s Aid and women in the music industry will take place in Glasgow later this month, fusing jewels, glitter and girl pop.
Created by all-girl indie-pop band TeenCanteen, The Girl Effect #2 is the second event of its kind following a successful launch earlier this year that raised £3,456.72 for Scottish Women’s Aid. The stellar line-up will include Scottish Album of the Year winner Kathryn Joseph.
The Girl Effect’s aim is to help some of the most vulnerable people in society at a time of cuts. Following the discovery of potential closures of Scottish Women’s Aid centres, TeenCanteen band member Carla decided to make a difference through music.

She said: “I talked about the closures with friends at large and wondered what would happen to the women and children who rely on the help and support from Scottish Women’s Aid?
“And I wondered why this hasn’t been more widely discussed.”
Spurred on by two massive personal milestones, Carla felt inspired: “Something popped into my head. My band TeenCanteen had played at two charity nights in Glasgow before that had been a great success.” An avid girl-group fan, Carla explored the significance of female bands within the history of popular music during her Masters of Fine Art.
She adds: “I wholeheartedly believe the girl-group genre is completely overlooked for its importance both critically and socially.
“For me the two went hand in hand together; raising money for Scottish Women’s Aid by promoting girls making music. And thus the Girl Effect came about.”
Carla continued: “I’d love to live in a world where organisations such as Scottish Women’s Aid don’t need to exist because as a society we had managed to end gender inequality and we’d been able to treat and stop the causes of domestic abuse. Until such a world exists I feel I should do my part to get us there.”
The Girl Effect #2 will take place on Thursday, November 26, in Mono, Glasgow, featuring a line-up including The Just Joans, Skies Fell, Bodyheat, Broken Records, Sonny Marvello and Cairn String Quartet.
Tickets are available for £10 from ticketweb.co.uk/event/197517.
