PERSONALLY, I’m very relaxed about an independent Scotland’s relationship with the EU. Maybe membership of EFTA or the EEA would be a better scenario for a free Scotland initially.
John Black (Letters, March 19) seems to think that in some way the EU has treated the UK badly – has he been following events? Has he seen the attempt by the UK to avoid and deflect from the most important issues under question? Has he seen the failed attempts by the UK negotiating team to divide EU members? Does he remember the basket case the UK was before joining Europe and of course “discovering” Scotland’s oil? Has he seen how Westminster has treated Scotland for hundreds of years? In my view, membership of an EU body would provide more democracy to Scotland than Westminster has, or ever will.
Attacks on the Scottish Government, disguised as attacks on the EU, may sit well with the politics of some, but despite their faults the SNP Government works very hard to provide ordinary Scots with the best despite being beholden to whims of austerity imposed by an extremely expensive and incompetent Westminster!

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
