THE Scottish Government, in getting its tax changes through parliament, is clearly demonstrating a fair and progressive taxation system that will benefit those hard-working families on low incomes, going some way to elevate poverty.

The new tax system will raise much-needed income (more than £200 million) for our cherished public services, something we all want – our NHS, education, housing and much more under the umbrella of public services.

Those services all need to be funded from the public purse, so why not ask those earning a little more to pay a little more? Very reasonable if anyone is serious about alleviating poverty.

But alas and with no surprise, the Conservatives at Holyrood are jumping up and down with dissent.

Perhaps their underlying issue is the Scottish Government demonstrating socially just policies, in stark contrast to the austerity cuts from the Conservatives at Westminster!
