KEITH MacLeod waxes lyrical in praise of electric vehicles but misses several points (Letters, September 18).

At the moment no vehicle is emission free: the electricity to charge the batteries must be generated somewhere, often at the cost of some pretty serious emissions.

Those who boast of lengthy journeys by electric car with minimal delay at fast charging points need to explain what length these delays would be if there were, say, 50 vehicles, or perhaps 100 or so, requiring power at the same time.

It would make more sense to opt for hydrogen-powered engines. So what if they are only 25 per cent efficient? What would that matter if the pollution-free gas was produced with cheap, renewable electricity?

As for a zero emissions trip to Hamburg, are we to assume the ferry boat had sails?
