COMMUNITY projects are good on so many levels, and one that is under way at Ulva Ferry, on the west coast of Mull, will play a vital role in the area’s future.

Locals have turned to crowdfunding to build two new affordable homes for rent, to address a shortage of such housing and to try to halt the decline in population, which is around 110.

Ulva is known as the birthplace of Lachlan Macquarie, the “Father of Australia”, who, as governor of New South Wales, brought reform to the convict colony and started an ambitious building programme in Sydney.

His spirit might still be alive in Ulva Ferry as the community bids to set a standard for high-quality, low-energy homes in Scotland’s remotest areas.

As the number of households suffering fuel poverty continues to rise, the people of Ulva Ferry have responded with a bold but well-considered attempt to tackle the issue.

Perhaps the Scottish Government might recognise their zeal and make a small contribution to their crowdfunding campaign.
