KEZIA Dugdale’s comments that Labour politicians should be allowed to campaign for the cause of Scottish independence in a second referendum is a welcome and major shift in her approach.

Her interview yesterday followed calls made earlier in the day by a mischievous Johann Lamont – one of Dugdale’s predecessors – for an open debate by members and indicates progressive voices in the party are coming round to the realisation that its pro-Union stance has been a disaster.

Whether Dugdale is suggesting the Scottish Labour leadership is in favour of independence is unclear, and probably unlikely. However, it does signal a less hostile and more refreshing position.

We cautiously welcome Dugdale’s views – she is, after all, known for changing her mind – and hope they spark a flurry of Labour politicians to back the fight for Scotland to become independent again.
