AS refugees continue to flee war-torn Syria in search of safety in Europe, protesters yesterday provided a timely reminder of the fate awaiting those who arrive in the UK: indefinite detention.

Now, more than ever, as the Tories attempt to demonise immigrants, we must speak out against the detention of vulnerable people whose only crime is seeking a better future.

Some of those detained have already suffered the worst kinds of persecution at home. In our civilised country, they should not be behind bars.
