LIKE anti-immigrant events elsewhere in Europe, the scenes in Dover when neo-Nazis staged violent protests against immigrants seemed a long way away.

But it appears some people travelled from Scotland to take part in these disgraceful events.

In Scotland in 2016 we pride ourselves on progressive thinking and on having broken away from the old, discredited politics.

But the Dover connection shows that in a society badly damaged by uncaring Tory policies we must be vigilant for the nastiest politics of all – the politics of hatred – sowing its seed among those left feeling disenfranchised as a result.
