GLASGOW Airport had its busiest September in 50 years after 934,295 passengers travelled through its doors, representing an annual increase of 4.2 per cent.

Domestic and international traffic grew by 4.2 per cent and 4.3 per cent respectively. Business was boosted by major events such as tennis’s Davis Cup and Celtic’s participation in the Champions League.

Strong demand for Ryanair’s service to Derry and extra capacity on easyJet’s Bristol and Belfast services bolstered domestic travel. International passenger numbers were boosted by a 12 per cent rise in EU scheduled services.

September also saw the launch of Ryanair’s new direct flights to Sofia in Bulgaria, and Icelandair added further capacity by increasing its Reykjavik route to a daily service. Airport managing director Amanda McMillan said: “Our strong performance throughout the year continued in September, which was also the fourth consecutive month the airport carried more than 900,000 passengers.

“We are on course to record our most successful year and this success can be attributed to our continued focus on not only attracting new services, but also working closely with our current airlines to enhance existing services.

“We are now gearing up for the October Week when tens of thousands of passengers jet off on sun and ski breaks.

“This month will see Ryanair launch new routes to Alicante, Malaga, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote and the introduction of Thomson’s new Cape Verde service.”
