FALKIRK'S Kelpies were among the winners at the first-ever World Canals Awards, part of the World Canals Conference in Inverness.

The world’s largest equine sculptures, the colossal, 30-metre-tall Kelpies, won the Pioneer Award. The scheme is driven by a partnership of Falkirk Council and Scottish Canals and supported by an award of £25m from the Big Lottery Fund.

The canals awards attracted submissions from more than 12 countries.

The Innovation Award went to a project from Venice, which developed a series of free apps designed to help people discover the wonders of Venice’s historic inland waterways.

The Leadership Award went to the creators of a guide to long-term, sustainable, and effective urban waterfront transformation along New York and New Jersey’s 700 miles of urbanised coast. The Guardian Award went to the the first-ever systematic audit of heritage boats on Ireland’s inland waterways.
