EMPLOYABILITY Minister Jamie Hepburn is to visit the newly-opened social enterprise Spoon Cafe in Glasgow, which offers training and work experience to adults with learning difficulties and others who may face barriers to employment.

Unity, a registered Scottish charity which launched the social enterprise arm of their service’s Spoon Cafe in 2003, has just extensively refurbished the Trongate site and its doors opened again on April 10.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Hepburn has been invited along to the updated Spoon Cafe to learn more about its ethos and the charity behind it on May 10.

Emma Soanes, chief executive of Unity, said: “We invited Jamie Hepburn along to the cafe to showcase our achievements within training and employability. We have worked with many people across the years and we are proud to be visited by the MSP for employability and training. Sharing with him our work, but also giving him the chance to meet some of the people we work with.”

Hepburn said: “The Spoon Cafe shows exactly why social enterprises are a crucial partner in providing training and employment opportunities to people with learning disabilities and those faced with social disadvantage.

Scotland is recognised as a world leader in social enterprise and we are now doing more through our social enterprise strategy and action plan. Supporting social enterprises like the Spoon Cafe is important so they can use their clear abilities to tackle social problems.”
