FIVE-a-side football business Goals Soccer Centres returned to profit last year, boosted by a new strategy under chief executive Mark Jones.

The East Kilbride-based firm posted pre-tax profit of £3.7 million in the year to December 31, compared to a £6.2m loss in 2015.

Sales rose 1.6 per cent to £33.5m as a five-year strategic plan begins to reap rewards. Part of that includes a refurbishment programme, which has seen upgrades to ProTurf pitches, new LED lighting systems and renewed stadia boards at 136 pitches across its estate.

The firm operates dedicated five-a-side football centres at 46 locations in the UK and one in Los Angeles.

Mark Jones, 55, joined last July from the Rank Group, where he led Grosvenor Casinos.
