Cally Phillips: Time to stop perpetuating the literary name-calling that is the Kailyard myth
THE cause of independence is poorly served by articles such as Professor Alan Riach’s “Before MacDiarmid changed Scottish literature, there was the Kailyard”. Mis-representing some very fine Scots writers by perpetuating the “Kailyard” myth (which is, in essence, just literary name-calling) does nothing to encourage the average reader to connect with our rich literary history.
